How to use the technical stock scanner?

Whether you're trading intraday momentum or swing setups, our technical stock scanner can help you identify opportunities that match your trading strategy, without filtering through charts mannually.

What can our technical stock scanner do?

Our technical stock scanner monitors the complete list of stocks trading on the US stock exchanges, and you can filter them based on specific technical indicators. These technical indicators are derived directly or indirectly from stock price action and volume.

Common scanning criteria include:

  • Price breakouts or breakdowns
  • Volume surges
  • Indicator levels (e.g., RSI, MACD, SMA/EMA crossovers)
  • Candlestick patterns (e.g., hammers, engulfing)

The stock scanner search and filter stocks that match your trading setup.

Step 1: Define Your Trading Setup

The most important step in using our stock scanner is knowing exactly what you're looking for.

Good technical scanners are only as effective as the logic behind them. You should define your setup in terms of technical indicators and chart patterns:

  • RSI(14) < 30 (oversold)
  • Price > 50-day moving average
  • Volume > 10 Million
  • Gap up (breakout)

You can also combine multiple technical indicators and chart patterns into your setup. However, you should start simple, and adding indicators when necessary. Too many technical indicators can lead to no result or missing great trade setups.

Step 2: Review and validate the Stocks

Once our stock scanner returns a list of stock symbols, take time to review their stock charts carefully:

  • Use charting tools to visually inspect the setup
  • Confirm that volume supports the price move
  • Discard any stocks that don't meet liquidity or volatility requirements

Many traders build a daily or weekly watchlist from the scan results, then monitor those tickers for confirmation.
